do betta fish sleep
Betta fishes like all the other creatures and like us sleep. The fishes may be differing in their sleeping habits as being diurnal or nocturnal. While the diurnal fishes are active during the day time or the light hours the nocturnal fishes sleep during the day and are active during the night time. Most fishes like all the other living creatures need to rest or sleep and stop moving and even pushing water with their fins, which can otherwise prove fatal for their survival and health.
The fishes mostly rest when the lights go out or when resting in the day time they do so between the leaves of the plants that are planted in their tanks or the aquariums while sleeping most fishes appear very pale and keep their eyes wide or expanded so that they can carefully see any movement in the water. The diurnal fishes being active at day time usually rest when the lights are off and when the surrounding environment or the room is completely dark.
The betta fishes rest but this activity of theirs is touted to be their sleep like all the other creatures including humans. The prolonged hours of lighting can lead to the rise in temperature of the water in the fish tank. So, to avoid any such hassle the lights are needed to be put off in the required time. The different fishes follow different pattern or sleeping habits. But most fishes while sleeping get slow down in activity, float in water or even hover at just one spot to actually illustrate that they are sleeping to the onlooker. Betta fishes on the other hand seem to lounge and most of them lay down in an L-shaped posture with the head up and the body on one side. Many betta fishes appear dead while they are sleeping and still other just stay on the top or near the water surface floating in their unique position to sleep peacefully and restfully.
All in all, while sleeping the mental functions at least some of them in the fishes gets shut down and they slip into a phase of a light nap. As most fish require making a movement every few seconds to avoid suffocation they require this in order to help the water move pass over the gills which is an essential activity needed for their survival. This also aids in delivering the life-gas or oxygen through their blood.
